A study was performed in order to determine whether the feeding activity ofGammarus pulexonArtemia salinaeggs is modified by the presence ofPomphorhynchus laevisand if so, the possible consequences for pollution evaluation using the feeding bioassay.Gammaruswere collected from the River Teme, Herefordshire, England together with 10 shell-less eggs ofA. salina. The feeding assay was carried out immediately, by recording at regular time intervals, the number of eggs consumed by each animal. The weight and length of eachGammaruswere measured and the animals dissected to reveal any infections withP. laevis, allowing classification of both large and small gammarids into parasitized and non-parasitized groups. Median feeding times were calculated and compared for the 4 groups of animals. Results indicated that parasitized animals took longer to consume the eggs than non-parasitized ones, while the variation in feeding rate was similar for each group. There were also no significant differences between the corresponding large and small animals. It was concluded that gammarids which are collected or cultured for use in toxicity tests should be assessed for parasite status in order to avoid the possibility of erroneous results arising from the use of parasitized animals.00187035.
