Effects of hydrophobic fraction of Cajanus cajan (L.) Millspaugh on bone density and blood lipid level in Obese and diabetic mice

Aim To investigate the effect of hydrophobic fraction of Cajanus cajan (L.) Millspaugh (SDE) on bone density and blood lipid level in diabetic and obese mice. Methods The db/db congenital diabetic mice and ob/ob congenital obese mice were orally administered with SDE for 8 weeks, bone density as well as serum TG, TC, LDL-C, HDL-C, ALP and Ca2+ were measured. Results Compared to mice treated with vehicle, (1) SDE-treated db/db and ob/ob mice had greater bone density (P < 0.05) and lower serum ALP level (P < 0.01), with serum Ca2+ level ly unchanged; (2) SDE-treated db/db mice had relatively unchanged blood lipid level, but SDE-treated ob/ob mice had significantly lower levels of TG (P < 0.05), TC (P < 0.01) and LDL-C (P < 0.01). Conclusion SDE increased bone density in diabetic and obese mice, and improved lipid metabolism in obese mice.
