Calcium phosphate invert glass-ceramic with a composition of 60CaO -30P2O53TiO2-7Na2O in mol% has an apatite-forming ability in simulated body fluid (S BF) at 37 °C; on its surface, the bonelike apatite forms after 20 days of soaking in SBF. In the present work the glass-ceramic was autoclaved in SBF or water at 121 °C prior to the soaking in SBF at 37 °C. Bonelike apatite started to form on the autoclaved glass-ceramic after 3 days of soaking in SBF at 37 °C; the apatite-forming ability could be drastically improved even after autoclaving in water at 121 °C. Although the residual glassy phase around the surface dissolved duri ng the autoclaving in water, titanium ion in the phase did stay around the surface. X-ray photoelectron spectroscopic analysis suggested that the hydrated titania groups form newly ar ound the surface during the autoclaving.
