Aging has been defined as a" progressive deterioration of the organism after maturity" and involves not only physiological and biochemical changes with age, but also increasing frequency of age-related pathology (19), such as Parkinson's disease and senile dementia. While all physical systems show agerelated changes, those of the central nervous system (CNS) play a dominant role in behavioral and several other functional changes in aging. Human and animal studies have indicated age-related declines in many functions including learning and short-term memory (5, 62, 97, 98), sexual activity (18, 74), food intake (74), sleep (74, 82), motivation and activity (18). Many of these functions are known to be modulated by hypothalamus-pituitary system which undergoes changes with aging and importance of which has been emphasized in the regulation of aging process (19).With a view to correlate the age-related changes in many physiological (including behavioral) function, numerous neurochemical investigations have been conducted with respect to alterations with aging in the activity of several neurotransmitters in the CNS, specially dopamine (DA), norepinephrine (NE), serotonin (5-hydroxytryptamine, 5-HT), acetylcholine (ACh) and gamaaminobutyric acid (GABA). Of these, the studies on DA and NE have been comparatively more extensive. The effects of aging on the various neurotransmitters, particularly DA and NE have been investigated in respect to the various phases of their metabolism eg synthesis, storage, release, receptor action, reuptake and biotransformatian (degradation). Numerous studies have been made mainly with enzymes involved in synthesis, receptor action and degradation of these neurotransmitters as well as their metabolites, concentration and turnover in various areas of the CNS and also other tissues.
