Knowledge of the reproductive biology of the Ectoprocta is fragmentary. Hyman (1959) reviews the subject and Ryland (1967) reviewed recent work on settlement seasons and larval behaviour. Silgn described the development of the ooecium, ovum and embryo in 1945 and fertilization in ectoprocts in 1966. Ryland (1963) and Gautier (1962) published some information on ectoproct breeding seasons in Norwegian and Mediterranean waters respectively. Between October 1959 and June 1962 ectoprocts were collected from around the south of the Isle of Man from the shore down to 100 m depth. Each month more than 100 colonies of common species and more than 20 colonies of most other species were examined and any reproductive activity noted. The data collected are recorded in the author's thesis (Eggleston 1963) deposited in the University of Liverpool Library and at the Marine Biological Station, Port Erin, and have been published in condensed form (Eggleston 1969). The present paper deals mainly with the patterns of reproduction and life-cycle of common Manx species. Ectoproct names are as in Eggleston (1969) and names of other organisms as in Bruce et al.(1963).
