The cells could not be demonstrated after fixation in 4% formaldehyde, but their stainability with toluidine blue was preserved after fixation in 0. 4-0. 8% formaldehyde. Apparently the granules of intestinal mast cells are more readily dissolved during histological processes than those of other mast cells. A fixative containing 0. 6% formaldehyde and 0. 5% acetic acid gave good preservation of stainability with toluidine blue of both types of mast cells in the rat.
