The methyl Grignard reaction with sabina ketone forms two isomeric sabinene hydrates, one of which is identical with an alcohol isolated from American peppermint oil. This isomer is assigned the trans (methvl/isopropyl) configuration on the basis of the yields of the isomers in the Grignard reaction, on the Von Auwer-Skita rule, and on differences in the chemical properties of the two isomers.
