“ocrvour。”rrc。)
In previou studies, investigators have found that s rimple self-report o f the presence of anxiety during WAIS resriog rrlared to lowered digit span performance (1, 4 ) . Furrhcr, WaLkcr, Sanniro, and Firerro ( 3 ) reported rimilar rignificanr rerulrr for nll of the WAIS verbal subrerrr, excepr for comprchcnrian, using the same rimple self-report of rhc presence of anxiety. The present invcsrigarian anempred to generalize the sbovc findings ro a performance cask rimilar ro rhe digit symbol of rhc WAIS. Male and female volunrccrs (ns = 48) from a n inrroducroty psychology class were administered the Tcrt Anxiety Questionnaire (TAQ) of Mnndler sod Sararoo (1952) . Sr were then individually giveo a digit symbol wrk similar ro rhc WAIS having 120 iremr and a 2-mi". rimc limit. At the end of the time limit, rhey were nrked ro write n rhorr dercriprion of how rhey had felt afrcr lhedring rhe inrrruc"ons which rravd rhar rhe rerr war a brlef measure of general inrelligcncc. Ss who were nor perronally known by rhe examincrr were divided into w o groups: "non.anxiou" ( N = 4 5 ) and "anxlou" ( N = 51) oo the barir of their expressed feelings o f anxiety (e.8.. "anxiour," "worried." "unrary." "ocrvour." rrc.) or no aoxiety (e.g., "calm," "unconcerned." "enjoyable." erc.) in rlle wrirrco reporrs. An analysis of the rclf-reporr g r o u p rhowed rhar rhere was no significanr difference between the TAQ scores of thc "anxious" and "nao-anxious" Sr (MA = 108, Msa = 100.3; 6 = 1.67, p > .05, nvo-railed [err). However, rhe self-report analysis war conrirrenr with the prevlaus srudier meotioned above. There war a significant lowering of performance for Sr reportiag aovicty ar compared with those nor reporting anxiety ( M A = 61.78, MI. = 65.53; I = 1.69, p < .05, one.railed rest) . There rerulrs suggest that the self. r c p r r merhodology would be n helpfvl ndjuncr in -king n more accurare lrrsrrrmcnr of not only the verbal tasks bur also rhe performance rasks of inrelligcncc rcrrr.
