N a + / H + exchange in cell plasma membranes has been shown to partially determine transmembrane Na+ and H + gradients and thus to regulate many cell functions dependent on these gradients. In chick intestine brush-border membrane, saturable transport of inorganic phosphate, D-glucose, and amino acids is supported by the N a + gradient and stimulated by vitamin D, which also inhibits N a + / H + exchange.’ This study examines the dependence of D-glucose transport on transmembrane N a + and H+ gradients.
