In the version of the article initially published, two references were omitted that should have been cited in Table 3. In the “Fly expression” column, a citation to Ruiz-Gómez, M., Coutts, N., Price, A., Taylor, MV & Bate, M. Drosophila dumbfounded: a myoblast attractant essential for fusion. Cell 102, 189–198 (2000) has been added to the “NPHS1” row, and a citation to Bour, BA, Chakravarti, M., West, JM, & Abmayr, SM Drosophila SNS, a member of the immunoglobulin superfamily that is essential for myoblast fusion. Genes Dev. 14, 1498–1511 (2000) has been added to the “NEPH1/KIRREL1” row. Additionally, in the legend for Fig. 1, the credit for parts e–h has been corrected to ref. 154 (Weavers et al.) instead of ref. 151 (Luan et al.). In Fig. 5a, the label now reading “Sns*” was previously “Hibris*”. These updates have been made in the HTML and PDF versions of the article.
