The following year, Dr. Short joined Walter Bauer, who had been appointed to organize the Robert W. Lovett Memorial Group for the Study of Diseases Causing Deformities, and, together with Granville Bennett, LR Morrison, and others, began studies of arthritis. Dr. Short's interests included synovial fluid pathophysiology, the role of infection in the pathogenesis of rheumatoid arthritis, and various forms of treatment. His study of the egress of proteins from dog joints showed that the pathway was almost entirely via the lymphatics. The methodology involved lymphatic cannulation and some of the first uses of homemade antisera for quantitative assays of the proteins in body fluids.In 1942, Dr. Short joined the 12th General Hospital as a Lieutenant Colonel, serving the 5th Army in the Mediterranean theatre. His extensive observations of musculoskeletal diseases in soldiers were later documented in a special report to the General of the Army.
