Information on the structure of the near-term baboon placenta is limited to papers by COVENTRY [1923], and HILLEMANN [1955], who describe one specimen each. Applicable studies on the human have been done by FRASER [1923], BURG [1929], SCHORDANIA [1929], and BACSICH and SMOUT [1938]. The placental structure of primates in general is considered by STARCK [1956]. The purpose of this paper is to present observations on the vasculature of the baboon placenta and to draw comparisons to the human placenta in light of the recent high interest in non-human primates as research models.
