Pulsed-field gel electrophoresis is used to visualize chromosome-sized DNA molecules of four microsporidian isolates from pest insects. Vavraia oncoperae isolated from Wiseana spp. caterpillars had 16 resolvable bands and the same species isolated from grass grubs had 14 resolvable bands. Chromosomal bands were more difficult to resolve for Nosema costelytrae and a Vairimorpha species from cabbage white butterflies, but electrophoresis revealed that these species had a minimum of 8 bands. The microsporidian DNA molecules resolved by this method are estimated to be between 130 and 1930 kilobases in size.
