In this review, idiotype is defined as the population of immunoglobulin molecules that reacts with a specific anti-idiotype serum. The topics covered are: taxonomy within an inherited idiotype; the expression of idiotype germ-line genes; the use of idiotypes for the study of V-region genes. A table is given of the strain distribution of idiotype genes.
