Guided by the concept of third places, a community-based participatory research study examined the features of the physical and social environment (e.g., the interactions and actions that occur) within a small senior centre in a mid-sized Canadian city, and the meanings associated with them that facilitate or undermine aging in place. Reflexive observation and audio-recordings of team meetings with eight centre members constituted the research data. For 'regulars' the senior centre seemed to function as a third place that supported aging in place, particularly by being accessible (physically and financially); however there were several factors that seemed to undermine this potential including restrictive hours, and limited opportunities for leadership or control. Opportunities for meaningful engagement, sociability (particularly fun), and having a contributing role were identified as positive factors contributing to aging in place. The results are discussed in relation to the literature on third places and aging in place.
