BACKGROUNDIn recent years, scientific linguists have formulated a conceptual framework which divides communication into three systems, thus permitting a more systematic study of interpersonal communication. l These systems are language, vocalizations, and kinesics, 2 each of which can be studied separately but must be considered in conjunction with the others in the final analysis of any piece of communication.
