Cyanogenesis was confirmed in all neo-tropical genera of the tribe Heliconiini and in the tropical genus Cethosia. In all cyanogenic species the source of cyanide is the glucosides linamarin and lotaustralin, the former always being present in the greater amount. All stages of the life cycle of Heliconius itself are cyanogenic, with the highest concentration of cyanide in ova and higher concentrations in females than in males. Experiments with isotopes have shown that the 2 cyanoglucosides are synthesized by Heliconius from the amino acids valine and isolencine at both larval and adult stages. Both catabolism and anabolism of cyanoglucosides seem to occur during the pupal stage.
