The yellow-legged hornetVespa velutinahas become one of the major alien species in European and East Asian countries. As in its homeland, the invadingV. velutinais reported as the major predator of honeybees and is becoming a threat to beekeeping in Europe. However, it remains unknown howV. velutinamight affect native hornets when it invades Asia, where a large number ofVespaspecies are distributed. Thus, by analyzing the mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I gene, we investigated whether interspecific mating occurs betweenV. velutinaand Japanese nativeVespaspp. Our results showed that the alienV. velutinacauses reproductive interference in Japanese native hornetVespa simillima. Forty-three percent of nativeV. simillimaqueens had the sperm ofV. velutinamales, and among the allV. simillimaqueens analyzed, 28% only hadV. velutinasperm. We did not find evidence ofV. velutinaqueens having the sperm ofV. simillimamales. These findings suggest that reproductive interference byV. velutinamales poses a threat to the nativeV. simillimapopulations. A decline ofV. simillimamay also negatively affect other insects that interact withV. simillima.
