Surveyed 35 patients (average age 32 yrs) and 28 staff at an acute, public, long-term facility for the mentally ill to examine whether patients evaluate their physical environment in a similar manner to staff in the same setting. Ss were primarily long-term inpatients involuntarily committed and diagnosed as schizophrenic (59%), bipolar (28%), depressive (7%), organic-affective (3%), and antisocial (3%). Ss were administered an environmental rating scale (ERS) in a structured interview format. Results indicate that staff and patient ratings did not differ significantly on almost 66% of the ERS items. This suggests that patients can evaluate their surroundings in a manner similar to staff.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2017 APA, all rights reserved)
