Previous experiments in the goat (cf. Andersson 1971) have suggested that a sodium sensitive receptor system near the third cerebral ventricle participates in the regulation of antidiuretic hormone (ADH) secretion. Further support for this concept has been obtained by infusions of pure saccharide solutions into the cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) of the lateral and third cerebral ventricles (Eriksson 1974). It was found that such infusions, which obviously reduce CSF [Na+], induce water diuresis in non-hydrated goats. However, it could not be excluded whether reduced CSF concentration of ions other than Na+ might be of importance for the observed inhibition of ADH release. The results of the present study seem to exclude this possibility.
