MATERIALS AND METHODSTwenty-one sytiovial biopsy specimens (Table 1) were ohtained from 19 patients with definite rheuriiatoid arthritis according to ARA criteria and three from three patients with juvenile rheumatoid. All adult rhenniatoid patients had rheuriiatoicl factor by the sensitized sheep cell agglutiiiatiori test. with titers ranging from 1/28 to 1/448. All juveniles were seronegative. All hut one specinien wrre obtained at surgery in the course of a variety of procedures. This specimen, from an adult, was obtained by needle biopsy. 6 Three of 19 adults arid 3 of 3 juveniles were receiving steroid therapy at the time of biopsy. None of the patients had received intra-articular steroid injections within two weeks prior to surgery. The maxirnirm dose was 7.5 ing. prednisolone daily. In three patients, two adult and one juvenile, 0.5 to 1.0 id. of 0.25 per cent colloidal gold suspension was injected intr~~-~~ rti~ i, l~ rl~~ one hour prior to s~ irgery.
