Two experiments examined the laryngeal nerves (LNs) controlling the production of ultrasounds and their nuclei of origin in a total of 147 10-day-old Sprague-Dawley rat pups. Unilateral and bilateral transections of the inferior LN reduced ultrasounds to undetectable levels. Transecting the superior LN either unilaterally or bilaterally reduced the sound pressure level, reduced the rate, and increased the fundamental frequency of the ultrasounds. Retrograde transport of horseradish peroxidase indicated that the efferent axons in the inferior LN arise from the cells of the dorsal formation of the nucleus ambiguus (NA) and that efferents in the superior LN originate from the ventral formation of the NA. Therefore, different aspects of the production of pup ultrasounds appear to be controlled by distinct neuronal subpopulations of the NA.(28 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
