A simple and effective synthetic methodology has been developed towards the preparation of 1,2-dibromoferrocenes, which have been structurally characterised. Ol tho-lithiation of p-tolylsulfinylferrocene followed by electrophilic quenching with dibromotetrafluoroethane results in the formation of 2-bromo (p-tolylsulfinyl) ferrocene. Further treatment of this compound with an excess of t-butyllithium subsequently results in the in situ generation of 1,2-dilithioferrocene, which can he quenched in the same manner to afford 1,2-dibromoferrocene.
