Bacterial urinary tract infection is a major problem in patients with diabetes mellitus. The pathogenesis and management of uncomplicated urinary tract infection and bacteriuria are reviewed. Complications associated with gas production in the urinary tract, such as emphysematous pyelonephritis, emphysematous pyelitis, and emphysematous cystitis, are reviewed, including the pathogenesis and management of these entities.
