I want to discuss some aspects of the theory of hypersurfaces of constant mean curvatureH.The subject is intimately related to the theory of minimal hypersurfaces which corresponds to the caseH= 0. There are, however, some striking differences between the two cases, and this can already be made clear in the simplest situation of surfaces in the euclidean three-spaceR3.
