In an elaboration of previously published studies by the authors (see PA, Vol 63: 10142 and 64: 8402) on the efficacy of various treatment methods for depression, evaluated the course of marital disputes in 65 females 48 mo after completion of an 8-mo treatment program for depression. Only a quarter of the women with marital problems at the beginning of treatment showed improvement of these problems after the treatment program, with the majority showing the same level of dispute as before. Similarly, women who presented with no marital disputes when treatment began continued to have none 48 mo later. Results indicate that the marital status of these depressed women was highly stable. Even when there had been improvement in the marital relationship during the treatment phase, it was usually short-lived, unless this improvement involved ending a bad relationship and not becoming involved in another. Findings are discussed in terms of previously published theoretical formulations of the role of marital disputes in depressed women, and the self-destructive elements observed in their approach to marital conflict are examined.(19 ref)(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
