The development of a fatty liver in normal rats following the administration of ethanol has been amply demonstrated (1-5). The occurrence of an impaired lipid tolerance, leading to hypertriglyceridemia, has also been reported (4). Recently it was observed that the prior administration of either a-tocopherol or NN-diphenpl-ppher~ plenediamine (DPPD) to rats subsequently treated with ethanol reduced or completely prevented, respectively, the fatty liver (6). The present study was undertaken to determine if the adminiistration of certain other antioxidants simultaneously with ethanol would also inhibit the development of the acute ethanol-induced fatty liver and hypertriglyceridemia.~ erimentalFemale rats (Holtzman Co., Madison, Wiac.) previous], y maintained on a Purina Chow diet were fasted for 8 hours. The animals then received by oral intubation, either a single intoxicating dose of ethanol in the amount of3g/Rg, as a 50~(v/v) solution, or a calorically equivalent amount of glucose. The ethanol and glucose solutions were mixed with corn oil or the oil soluble anti-# Supported in part by grant-in-aid from the CD Sinither~ a Foundation, the
