When saliva was fractionated by chromatography on Sepharose CL-2B (Pharmacia Fine Chemicals, Inc., Uppsala), it was found that aggregating activity was present both in the void volume region (fig. 1, peak 1) and in a region that eluted at about one half of the total column volume (peak 2). The activity in the latter peak con stituted about 3% of the total aggregating activity recovered from all fractions. How ever, the fraction in this region was variable between experiments and was as high as about 15% of the total. The eluted samples were lyophilized, redissolved in H20 and assayed for IgA by immunodiffusion against goat anti-human IgA (Miles-Yeda, Ltd.). Fractions from the void volume failed to give precipitin bands. Similarly, none of the fractions up to No. 32 contained any meas urable IgA. Fractions 33-38, however, gave strong precipitin lines and were inactive in the aggregation assay. The precipitin lines
