Numerical modelling of M2tidal streams in the Celtic Sea with a sea level lowered by 100 m indicates tidal currents about twice as strong as those at present. Such currents would have been sufficient to generate and maintain the linear tidal sand banks now found in that region as moribund bedforms. Furthermore, an indicated clockwise rotation of the major axes of the tidal ellipses at a sea level lowered by 100 m with respect to the present day is in the correct sense to further the comparison with modern examples of actively maintained linear tidal sand banks.
