Seven open reading frames of human mtDNA 3 encode subunits of the rotenone-sensitive respiratory chain NADH dehydrogenase (Chomyn et al., 1985, 1986). Plant mitochondria also have an inner membrane rotenonesensitive NADH dehydrogenase (Moller and Palmer, 1982, Cottingham and Moore, 1988), and plant mtDNAs encode similar NADH dehydrogenase (nad) subunit genes. Plant chl DNAs encode genes similar in sequence to mt NADH dehydrogenase subunits (Ohyama et al., 1986, 1988; Shinozaki et al., 1986). There is no strong precedent for the existence of a functional NADH: ubiquinone (or NADPH: plastoquinone) oxidoreductase in higher plant chloroplasts. As it is unlikely that chl ndh genes are remnants of a transferred segment of mtDNA, their presence in ch! DNA suggests that both plant cell organelles contain an NADH dehydrogenase-like multisubunit complex. Here we show that the pea, Pisum sativum, has two versions of
