This article discusses the current special issue of Brain Research. The central noradrenergic system consists of clusters of norepinephrine (NE)–containing neurons scattered through the pons and medulla of the mammalian central nervous system (CNS). LC–NE neurons project throughout the neuraxis, including the cerebral cortex, thalamus, cerebellum, midbrain and spinal cord. NE was originally viewed as a putative conventional neurotransmitter whose primary action was to increase or decrease the firing rate of target neurons. Since the identification of NE-containing cells in the CNS there has been a concerted effort to characterize the attributes of these neurons and their role in brain function and behavior. Much of that work focused on the largest of the NE containing cell clusters in the brain stem, the nucleus locus coeruleus. The articles presented in this special edition of Brain Research highlight evidence that calls for greater appreciation of the complexities of the noradrenergic network as it relates to normal operations and dysfunction of the central nervous system.(PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2016 APA, all rights reserved)
