A simple morphological description of radio hot spots is given, based on recent observations of high linear resolution. It is stressed that hot spots are intrinsically non-axisymmetric and the consequences for theoretical modelling are indicated. It is suggested that flow velocities in powerful sources are relativistic on all scales up to and including that of the hot spots.
