A slurry sample and rectal swabs taken from 105 cattle on a farm suspected of being linked by the consumption of untreated milk from the farm with a cluster of human cases of infection with verotoxigenicEscherichia coliO157 were cultured and examined by an immunomagnetic separation and secondary enrichment (IMSE) technique. Direct culture yielded 2 isolates ofE. coliO157 from rectal swabs and the IMSE technique yielded isolates from rectal swabs (including the 2 direct isolates) and one from the slurry sample. Milk samples collected subsequently from the 10 positive cattle yielded one sample ofE. coliO157. All the strains isolated, including those from the human cases, harboured a single 92 kb plasmid, produced VT2but not VT1and were phage type 2. This is the first incident ofE. coliO157 infection in the UK in which a suspect food source has been confirmed microbiologically. Further studies are under way to determine the mode and frequency of contamination of milk by the organism and the duration of its excretion.
