“Crystal engineering” implies control over the design and preparation of desired crystal structures. That control can be compromised by the existence or appearance of polymorphs for the compound in question. Regaining control requires an understanding of the conditions for obtaining each of the crystalline forms of the material. Chemical microscopy can be useful in determining those conditions. The historic importance of thermomicroscopic methods is reviewed and a number of examples of translating thermomicroscopic observations into single crystals suitable for X-ray study are presented.
