deployment of primary testimonies from regular soldiers, international observers, Italian commentators, ships’ captains, medical doctors, religious authorities, as well as the Italian general overseeing the Asinara camps. Juxtaposing official reports and private accounts, Gorgolini puts a human face on the brutal conditions and the incredible death rates prisoners suffered under both Serbian and Italian custody. Seven thousand of these AustroHungarians died while in Italian charge, amounting to a death rate of nearly 30%. In this book, Gorgolini exposes the complete unpreparedness and mismanagement on part of the Italian authorities who – in their eagerness to score diplomatic victories – displayed utter disregard for the fate of the prisoners. Ultimately, Gorgolini leaves no doubt that with regard to the treatment of POWs, Italy cannot compare itself favorably with the other belligerent countries.
