Crosses of the 41-chromosome monosomic line HH, which is derived fromTriticum vulgare'Holdfast' and resembles other monosomics in meiotic behaviour, with 44-chromosome plants carrying the full complement of wheat chromosomes plus a pair of ryechro mosomes, gave rise to a number of 20-chromosome nullihaploid plants carrying all the wheat chromosomes except that for which HH is monosomic. These nullihaploids exhibited a markedly higher frequency of bivalents and trivalents than did 21-chromosome euhaploids of Holdfast. Similarly, three 40-chromosome nullisomics deficient for the HH pair all had large and frequent multivalents and associated univalents. It is concluded that the HH chromosome is responsible for the inhibition of homeologous associations. A haploid plant with 20 normal wheat chromosomes plus the isochromosome formed from the long arm of the HH chromosome behaved as the euhaploids, and in a 41-chromo-some monosomic with 20 pairs of normal wheat chromosomes and an HH chromosome represented only by a telocentric of the long arm, no multivalent formation was observed, suggesting that control of bivalent formation may be restricted to the long arm.
