Symmetry considerations are used to determine the possible magnetic structures for a given crystal. The magnetic moment density is defined in two ways: (1) from the quantum mechanical definition of spin density, (2) from the classical concept of an array of magnetic moments. Since both definitions should have the same transformation properties, restrictions can be placed on the possible magnetic structures. Some applications of this theory are suggested.
