ConclusionsWith adequate natural exposure in an English-speaking environment, Japanese native-speakers can overcome effects of equivalence classification to develop a separate, independent L2 segmental category for a sound that is similar to one in the L1. Such exposure further curbs the effects of L1 phonological transfer which impedes the articulation of distinct L2 segments in specific phonetic contexts. The precise threshold of exposure required is to be addressed in future research.
