The magnetic structure of the compound DyNiSi2(CeNiSi2type of structure) has been studied by neutron diffraction and magnetic measurements. The paramagnetic neutron data confirmed the structure reported earlier for this compound. The analysis of the data collected in the magnetically ordered regime (TN=24 K) showed the occurence of a two step magnetic ordering described by the presence of three wave vectors. In a very narrow region immediately below TNthe ordering is described by a transversal sine wave modulated structure associated with the wave vector q2=1/5b*. Below 22 K a phase transition takes place manifested by the appearance of higher harmonics pertaining to the wave vectors q1=(010)=5q2and q3=3q2. The I(q1) intensities increase at the cost of the I(q2) and I(q3) ones. The intensities I(q1) and I(q2) coexist down to 1.5 K in varying proportions while the only very weak reflection of q3disappears down to 1.5 K. The wave vector q1=(010) pertains to a collinear moment arrangement of the Dy moments along c with the magnetic space group CP(22′21′/m′cm)i′ S57391. The refined moment value at 1.5 K is μDy=7.5(1)μB.
