A 10 1/2-month-old girl succumbed to an illness initially characterized as a respiratory infection and culminating in severe cardiac failure. Myocarditis of an interstitial type without significant necrosis was found at autopsy. A Coxsackie Group A, type 16, virus was recovered from the intestinal contents but not from the myocardium. This observation and isolated reports from the literature suggest a possible etiologic relationship between Coxsackie Group A viruses and myocarditis.
