Highlights • Detection of wastewater-human AMR associations is promising despite diverse methods.• Including composite influent, 12-month timeframe and WwTW-human overlap appears optimal.• Specific species and AMR mechanisms appear more suited to the approach than others.• Genomic approaches facilitate agnostic detection and biostatistical synthesis.• More studies with clear reporting are needed to validate “best practice” protocols.
