A study was conducted to examine bacteria withinDermacentor variabilis, the major vector of Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever in eastern North America [date not given].D. variabiliswere collected by dragging in several locations in Indiana, USA. A significant proportion of sequences obtained were highly similar toArsenophonus, γ-proteobacteria and Enterobacteriaceae family. Phylogenetic analysis of approximately 1349 bp of sequence showed thatDermacentor-associatedArsenophonustype 16S-rDNA sequences form a coherent group (0.7 average divergence) related to, but distinct from otherArsenophonustype microbes. Results indicate high densities of possible endosymbionts inDermacentorpopulations.
