MATERIALS AND METHODSThe three commonly used preservatives, benzalkonium chloride, chlorobutanol, and thimerosal, were used in this study. Aqueous solutions of benzalkonium chlo ride, chlorobutanol, and thimerosal, in con centrations of 4, 2, 1, and 0.1%, were pre pared by dissolving the solute in distilled water at a normal pH. There were 12 groups of nine rabbits each. Twice a day each rabbit received in each eye one drop of benzalkonium chloride, chloro butanol, or thimerosal in concentrations of 4, 2, 1, or 0.1%. The eyes were examined and photographed at different time intervals. The rabbits were killed one to seven days after the application of these solutions. After a small opening was made near the corneoscleral limbus to permit more rapid access of the fixative, the eye was placed in 0.5% cetylpyridinium chloride in 10% neu tral-buffered formalin for 24 hours. The cornea, including a small ring of sclera, was then excised and returned to the same fixa tive for a minimum of 72 hours. After ethanol dehydration, the specimens were em bedded in paraffin for perpendicular and hor izontal sectioning. An eye from each animal
