The complex morphogenesis of tissues and their successful participation in an organism’s homeostasis depend on regulatory interactions of the tissue cells with their environment. The influence of soluble extrinsic molecules on genetic expression is best illustrated by the powerful effects of hormones. Less well appreciated but also with significant effects on genetic expression are the contacts and physical associations that nearly all cells make with other cells or with extracellular structures. The importance of these associations to cell function is poorly understood, because they are not easily manipulated or assessed in situ, and even when duplicated in vitro one must determine which aspects of cellular contact are regulatory.
