A method with appropriate validation is described for quantitatively studying single or multiple environmental effects on western corn rootworm, Diabrotica virgifera virgifera LeConte, larva development, and survival to adult stage. The method used a controlled-environment greenhouse (26 ± 5°C pot soil temperature at 10 cm depth, 45–65% RH, 14:10 [L:D] photoperiod), terra-cotta clay pots (30.5 cm diameter by 30.5 cm high), and a sandy-clay loam soil. Soil moisture was regulated with a rigid watering regime. Instar occurrence was determined by sampling pots every other day. This occurrence was related to growing-degree-days (GDD), base 11°C, with linear equations. Equations with R2 values of 0.62, 0.63, and 0.69 for first, second, and third instars, respectively, predicted 50% occurrence for first instar at 74 GDD, second instar at 150.5 GDD, and third instar at 247.2 GDD. This method also provided a relatively uniform survival rate to the adult stage (67 ± 15% [ x ¯ ± SD]).
