In 8 patients with so-called idiopathic degenerative arthritis of the hip the acetabular labrum, at surgery, was in the articulation between the femoral head and the acetabulum. None of the patients had a history or roentgenographic evidence of congenital dysplasia or congenital dislocation and none had a closed reduction of manipulation of the hip during infancy, childhood or adolescence. No patient had a traumatic dislocation. The intra-articular labrum was possibly a developmental abnormality and this abnormality was apparently the cause of the degenerative arthritis.
