Almenas are a type of roof-ornament that decorated both residences and temples in the Classic-period city of Teotihuacan. We present a typology of almenas based on their form, and apply the typology to 757 fragments of almenas collected by the Teotihuacan Mapping Project in the 1960s. Most of these pieces are ceramic sherds of the type “granular.” Fragments of almenas were recovered from all types of structures at the ancient city. They are found equally at temples and residences, but they are found more commonly at high-status residences than at low-status residences. We also describe a group of 88 almenas from publications and museum collections. As visually prominent architectural ornaments, almenas likely communicated information about the wealth, status and identity of the people who lived in or used specific buildings at Teotihuacan.
