Known enzymic activity of mitochondria led to experiment on their disruption by 9-kc/sec. sonic vibrations. Octanoic acid oxidase was completely inactivated; succinoxidase about 50%; while DPN-cytochrome reductase and cytochrome oxidase were inactivated less than 20%. After centrifuging for 10 min. at 5,000 g., and again for 30 min. at 148,000 g., 58% of total N was still in supernatant; also some enzyme activity; but most of enzyme activity was in the 2d sediment. Components of the supernatant gave sedimentation constants of 4-5, 7.2, and 12.0 Svedberg units.
