METHODS Adult cats were anesthetized with intraperitoneal pentobarbital sodium (Diabutal, Diamond Laboratories) and the sural nerve was exposed aseptically, 3-4 cm proximal to the heel. In eight animals, the epineurium and perineurium were incised and a segment of nerve, 1-2 mm long, was removed. All the sural fibers were severed in five animals, while in the other three the nerve consisted of a large lateral bundle and a small medial one, and only the fibers of the lateral bundle were cut. The nerves were not sutured after cutting. In one animal, a 3-mm length of the nerve was thoroughly crushed.
