S. pneumoniae type 3 was isolated from 7 tracheobronchial aspirates and 1 pleural tap of 7 adult horses and 1 foal. There was no direct evidence in these horses that isolation of the pneumococcus was related to a specific disease syndrome. Presenting complaints included 2 horses with chronic cough, 2 horses with decreased exercise tolerance, 1 horse with exercise-induced pulmonary hemorrhage and 3 horses with pneumonia. Antibiotic therapy resolved the primary clinical complaint. This is the first report of the isolation of S. pneumoniae type 3 from adult horses.
